The Wisconsin/Nicaragua Partners of the Americas, Inc. is a charter member of Partners of the Americas, Inc. The mission of the partnership is to promote understanding and develop ties of friendship between the people of Wisconsin and Nicaragua. With traditional approaches to international development methods being challenged, W/NP provides unique alternatives involving people-to-people activities. The W/NP concept of partnership empowers the citizens from both countries to identify and affect change. Each side of the partnership is incorporated or registered, has elected Boards of Directors and rotating officers, and operates financially independently of the other.
"Working together, we make a difference."
Taking a long-term view of development, W/NP strives to "teach people to fish" on both sides of the stream. W/NP volunteers leverage small amounts of money that multiply up to twelve-fold, providing in-kind goods and services for a variety of project activities. We bring people together, help them become aware, and show them ways to put their new ideas into action. We bring about tremendous change in people's lives by moving quickly, and it does not require costly tax dollars.
Within the organization, W/NP has a unique Partner City program linking communities in Nicaragua with communities in Wisconsin. This structure provides grass roots opportunities in people-to-people activities at the local level. Each of the Partner City Committees has its own autonomous organization and elected officers, which fosters a mutual sharing of cultural exchange, ideas, energy, and concern for each other. Appleton has been partnered with Chinandega, Nicaragua since 1992, and in 2002 “adopted” the village community of Las Lagunas. Recently Partner City Committees have become project based and may partner with other communities where help is needed.
W/NP is one of the few organizations that has had a strong and continuous presence in Nicaragua with people-to-people activities, exchanges, projects, disaster relief, and a variety of institutional linkages in place since 1964.
W/NP is well received throughout Nicaragua because the organization is non-partisan and has no political agenda.
